Income riders are among the most popular features on FIAs, and also often the most misunderstood. A client who hears “7% guaranteed growth” and assumes it means cash in the account, will eventually feel misled, and that turns into a complaint which discredits both the agent and the IMO.

This module takes the rider apart. Agents learn the difference between the benefit base and the account value. They work through simple and compound roll-up rates, payout factors by age, how the rider fee is charged, and what happens when the account value reaches zero while payments continue.

Agents then practise turning these mechanics into a clear client explanation: how much income the rider guarantees, when it starts, what it costs, and what the client gives up if they never use it. They also learn to compare riders across carriers the way that matters, by guaranteed income per $100,000 at the client’s planned start age, rather than by headline roll-up rates.

Just as important, agents learn when a rider is not worth buying. For a client focused on growth with no need for lifetime income, the fee simply reduces the account value. An agent – who knows when to leave the rider out – earns credibility that carries into every other recommendation.
