The sale starts a relationship that runs through the whole surrender period, often five to ten years. How agents handle those years decides whether the client renews, withdraws prematurely, refers friends and family, or files a complaint.

This module covers what happens after the contract is issued. Agents learn what a carrier can reset at each anniversary, such as caps, participation rates and spreads, and what stays fixed, such as guaranteed minimums and the surrender schedule. They learn how bailout provisions work, how to reallocate between crediting strategies at the anniversary, and how to read a carrier’s renewal-rate history before recommending its products.

Agents also build a simple annual review: a short call to walk through the anniversary statement, explain the interest credit earned, go over the new renewal rates, and check whether the client’s needs have changed. A client who hears about a lower cap from their agent first, with a proper explanation, reacts very differently from one who discovers it on a statement.

The module closes with the compliance side of retention: when a replacement is and is not in the client’s best interest and what must be compared and documented.
